Confused Newbie about Bipolar Mother or 'Normal' Behaviour ...

Hi out there,

I am a new member here. And I am looking for some insight and perhaps one day able to give insight on here as well. Reason why now? After this past year I have realized my mother's hurtful and verbally abusive/moody behaviour all my childhood/teen/young adult years are not normal behaviours and not what every mother does in secret. Then again, I am unsure also still because it's the only way I know. I'm in my 20's, if that information helps at all.

I want to keep this short.. because I would like someone to read it. I am looking for quite a bit of insight even after this.. because I am starting to worry about myself as well. Realizing some behaviours might not be "normal" in my mother has made me start to question my own in friendships etc.

In point form of things I quickly remember my mom does on constant:

- She constantly comes back in the room to say something mean to me ("You can consider packing your bags and moving out in 7 days" and then slams the door "You're not actually that pretty. I don't know why people think you are." I am not sure if this is normal or not normal from someone if I suggested not for us to reset the internet modem as it is not broken, her computer needs to be restarted.)

- She blames me for starting smoking again and ever since I've returned from my work trip that everything is bad again (even though messaging overseas she was all happy and excited for me to come home). Speaks outloud to say "Six months I didn't smoke a cigarette and now I started again. They are so disgusting. Since you've come back I started smoking again." In a very theatrical way. We weren't having a convo, I just happened to have walked within proximity.

- She is angry/moody in random bursts at home and whenever someone is in close proximity, starts talking about all the negative things even if no one is having a convo. Complains about small stuff non stop. Basically, when she is at work or fitness or sleeping is the only time her voice is not there with negative commentary for a general audience to hear.

- Doesn't listen to anyone, talks over me if I even have the chance to every try having a convo with her.

- Talks bad about me, lies about me to anyone.

- Threw a pot really hard in the sink (caused a huge scene that night for us all) because I didn't want to eat her spaghetti at 11:30 pm at night.. which she made specifically only for me. No one was asking for the dinner and she wasn't planning to eat it either. (There is more to this and it sounds crazy for me to write it, but my mother is legitimately trying to get me fat as I have discovered she is jealous of my life and me). I still cringe at coming to terms to say that outloud. I am in denial this is even possible from my own mother. I am willing to answer questions if need to make more sense of this one. This is just a scene I recently remember that was very painful. I have neglected/forgotten many similar physical situations as they are negative.

(Edit for above: She threw the pot in the sink after my dad decided to go grab some since no one was going to eat it. Then started shouting at him for being stupid and saying it was for me not for my dad. Comes back into my room telling me I'm stupid and dad ate everything. Then the physical drama started).

- In general, she is very dramatic.. likes to pretend we have nothing to eat, makes a scene for having to take sleeping pills. Pretty much constantly announcing things and how everything is hard for her

I don't feel I am able to provide these points properly as I really don't know what is common stressful behaviour or bipolar. To be honest, if I could write a book it would be bipolar but the writing is already getting too long in this post and I am looking for some insight first.

Once I can understand if she is or isn't (even if just potentially), I can understand better what I want to do with this information and if I can help.. or help myself leave the situation.

Help?

Having enough light during an emergency is crucial, but traditional flashlights just don?t last very long. Revere Supply Co.?s 30-Day Lantern is an efficiency powerhouse. The company says its lantern will last between 30 and 45 days in continuous use on just three D batteries. That could mean a life-saving lighting supply during a natural disaster or roadside emergency.

(AP Photo/ John Minchillo, File)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Blame a very high tide driven by a full moon, the worst storm surge in nearly 200 years, and the placement of underground electrical equipment in flood-prone areas for the most extensive storm-related power outage in New York City's history.

It's like what happened at the Fukushima nuclear complex in Japan last year ? without the radiation. At a Consolidated Edison substation in Manhattan's East Village, a gigantic wall of water defied elaborate planning and expectations, swamped underground electrical equipment, and left about 250,000 lower Manhattan customers without power.

Last year, the surge from Hurricane Irene reached 9.5 feet at the substation. ConEd figured it had that covered.

The utility also figured the infrastructure could handle a repeat of the highest surge on record for the area ? 11 feet during a hurricane in 1821, according to the National Weather Service. After all, the substation was designed to withstand a surge of 12.5 feet.

With all the planning, and all the predictions, planning big was not big enough. Superstorm Sandy went bigger ? a surge of 14 feet.

"Nobody predicted it would be that high," said ConEd spokesman Allan Drury.

At one point, nearly 1 million ConEd customers lost electricity in and near the city ? a record number for the utility. And the troubles didn't end as the storm slowly moved off. Con Ed said problems to its high-voltage systems caused by the hurricane forced the utility to cut power to about 160,000 customers in Brooklyn and Staten Island on Tuesday night.

But the signature event came when a surge of water pushed forward by the storm's winds poured over the banks of the East River near the substation on 13th Street.

As water poured into the substation Monday night, the blinding flash of an explosion lit the most famous skyline in the world. A huge section of the city that never sleeps fell into darkness.

It's exactly what a proactive ConEd hoped to avoid by shutting down three similar power networks in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn in advance of the storm surge.

However, the combination of circumstances, notably an extraordinary high tide, pushed massive amounts of water deep into the city. The underground infrastructure was suddenly vulnerable.

As the storm's predicted path zeroed in on New York City, ConEd brought on extra work crews and laid plans to shut down some underground equipment in lower Manhattan and other parts of the city.

By late Monday afternoon, the utility started to notify Manhattan customers south of 36th Street that power might be shut off if underground equipment was flooded with corrosive, destructive seawater. The company gave the same heads-up to some customers in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

By mid-evening, though, conditions had worsened. More than 150,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County were already off grid. The utility began turning off the power, as a precaution, to a section of lower Manhattan, including Wall Street, in an attempt to stem damage. Shortly afterward, the company began cutting electricity in parts of Brooklyn too; a total of 220,000 other customers were already in the dark.

Less than an hour later, more equipment flooded, sparks flew, and the blast boomed across the East River and throughout lower Manhattan from what ConEd believes was a circuit breaker at its flooded substation.

The flooded equipment had failed.

When live electric equipment is inundated with salt water, electricity escapes every which way, sending sparks flying and damaging equipment. "You see a huge blast just from the short circuit," says Arshad Mansoor, senior vice president for research and development at the Electric Power Research Institute, an industry-funded research group.

As day broke Tuesday, the company was busily assessing damage and fixing equipment. But downed trees and wires, as well as lingering flood waters, made it hard for repair crews to reach some areas. The utility was able to get at least 140,000 customers back on the grid within several hours.

But hundreds of thousands of others hunkered down for a longer outage. ConEd said customers served by underground equipment should be restored to service in four days. Those who get power from overhead lines are expected to wait a week. That's because there are so many fallen lines.

The most densely populated parts of the city, mostly in Manhattan and Brooklyn, are served by underground transmission wires. These offer protection from wind and falling tree limbs that plague overhead wires and make the suburbs far more vulnerable to outages.

But underground wires can flood and be more difficult to repair, especially in low-lying areas. It can be harder for workers to get to the wires because manholes flood. When water recedes, it can be harder to find problems, pull out wires and equipment, dry them, fix them, and slide them back into place.

The damage assessment could take days to complete.

To engineers like Joannes Westerink, a University of Notre Dame researcher who is working on a computer model for future New York City storm surges, this was all predictable.

"You build infrastructure too low, and you run into trouble," he said. "It's a recipe for disaster."

He said it's well known that New York City had spread to ever-lower zones in modern history. He cited Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan as a dramatic example.

ConEd could likely have shut down more networks served by the 13th Street substation before the storm arrived, but that would have meant cutting power to tens of thousands of people and critical facilities like hospitals. Even though hospitals have backup power generators, they too can fail. Generators at New York University Langone Medical Center went down Monday night, and patients were evacuated.

"You have to make the decision to shut off power to a substation very, very carefully, especially if it serves critical facilities," Mansoor said. The decision can turn into a lose-lose situation.

Despite the latest damage, Mansoor called the New York City system the most reliable in the world because it's normally well protected from weather and set up with backup equipment. That protects the city from minor disruptions and helps keep major disruptions from cascading through the city.

No system, he said, can be designed to withstand every storm, no matter how severe.

Carol J. Friedland, a Louisiana State University engineer who has studied the impact of flooding on electrical systems, said more measures should be taken to protect equipment in low-lying places. For example, sea walls can be raised, and equipment can sometimes be relocated.

"My personal opinion ... is that there should be more resilience built into these types of infrastructure, because when the power goes out, it disrupts the entire community," she said.

Massoud Amin, a University of Minnesota electrical engineering professor who has studied power outages, said the storm underscores the need to improve the nation's electric grid by stringing more high-voltage wire and using modern sensor technology to spot problems sooner, isolate damage, and speed recovery from outages.

"Our electrical infrastructure system is a marvel of engineering for the last century," Amin said. "The grid operators and the power companies are doing the best they can."

It is too soon to say if anything more could have been done to keep the New York City grid working. Under state regulations, ConEd will be required to file a report on the outage to the New York State Department of Public Service within 60 days of power restoration. That agency's staff will evaluate how problems were handled and if improvements can be made for the future, according to agency spokeswoman Pamela Carter.

Madison Women s Health Care?A Place Where Women Can Feel ...

For a woman, at times, there are several issues to deal with in personal. There are topics a woman should talk about with a specialized supporter without interruptions coming from outside. Included in such topics is the matter of health, pregnancy, or even other seemingly ?small??problems. This is the turning point that triggered the establishment of madison women?s health.

It is not to say that regular health care cannot be trusted in handling women?s problems, but in fact, many of women?s health problems require different approach?a fact that makes it looks like impossible to give a thorough investigation regarding one?s health problem. By providing them a special care, it is expectable that women can obtain full coverage that can help improve their health better.

The madison women?s health clinic even deals with the most sensitive case that presents itself in the form of pregnancy difficulties. By taking care its patients carefully, the clinic can help one to regain her own self-respect?something that might not occur in regular health care.

It means that besides giving women physical assistance, the clinic also deals with how to make a patient feel comfortable because it doesn?t matter how good a health service being given, if it cannot fulfill her needs of getting psychological support, it?s useless.

Other aspect covered by the clinic is giving a patient a thorough gynecological support. For women of teenage age, it might be the case of aversion that they refuse to pay a visit to OBGYN?for any reason whatsoever. Dealing with this problem, the clinic offers a service of adolescent gynecology to assist them comprehensively.

Talking about service, listed below a complete service given by madison women?s health care center:

- Counsel on contraception. A patient can ask for thorough overview regarding contraceptives so that she could better understand whether to take hormonal control or oral contraceptives, or even to try out using other procedures.

- Explanations about how important condom is in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

- Pregnancy-related care, including counsel pre-, during, and post-natal.

- Pap smear examinations. If surgery is required for this matter, the clinic also provides counseling to help an individual get the better insight regarding it.

- In relation to menstruations?from unreasonable amount of excess during menses up to the irregularity of menses pattern?the clinic also provides suitable treatment.

- It also deals with patients with the case of ovarian cysts.

Seeing from the given short list of available service in madison women s health center, it can be said that many of the cases often managed by it are the one that if not managed carefully and sensitively, one could only suffer from more complications.

In conclusion, with such a clinic that is supported by several respectable women of physician, women can feel safer about how to better consult their problem without having any reluctance and all.

PlayMakers Rep's Premiere of David Ball's Zany New Adaptation of ...

The cast of ?The Imaginary Invalid? includes Kathryn Hunter-Williams (left) as Klytemnestra, Steven Epp as Argon, Molly Ward as Toinette (photo by Jon Gardiner)

The instant Steven Epp as Moli?re steps out on the stage of the Paul Green Theatre to introduce the PlayMakers Repertory Company?s brand-new adaptation of the celebrated 17th century French actor and playwright?s 339-year-old play, The Imaginary Invalid, to a 21st century audience in Chapel Hill, it is clear that this is no average resurrection of a classic. Instead, Moli?re becomes a character in his own play; and the present is woven into the production ? often hilariously and often erratically, but always with an eye on the original story.

The story about Argon (also played by Steven Epp), a wealthy hypochondriac convinced he has every disease known to man (especially those that originate from bowel problems), is rife with sight gags and pratfalls and totally insane characters (spoiler: there?s not a normal one in the bunch). From the moment Argon receives his first shot of antiseptic spray from his nurse (Julie Fishell), it is clear that writer David Ball, who created this adaptation especially for PlayMakers, and director Dominique Serrand have a bona fide hit on their hands, a hilarious and fast-paced retelling of the comedy that was Moli?re?s last play ? and, ultimately, the one that killed him, because Moli?re died onstage while playing Argon on Feb. 7, 1673. Though there?s nothing funny about the French master of comedy dying onstage, there very definitely is something funny happening on the PlayMakers stage with this adaptation.

The play opens with Argon introducing his various maladies while his nurse (Julie Fishell) tells him what his bills are for the various tests. It is fairly certain that most people in the audience could relate to the shock Argon feels at the cost for invasive tests that ultimately tell him nothing about what is really wrong with him ? or how his quack of a doctor, Dr. Wachauvia (played by Jeffrey Blair Cornell), will cure each of the various ills. When Argon has had enough of the bills, he calls (and calls and yells) for his assistant Toinette, played by Molly Ward, and thus begins a constant parade of people in Argon?s life who clearly see through his hypochondria and use it to try to bilk him of his wealth.

One of those people who couldn?t care less about Argon?s money ? and is just as crazy as he is ? bounces onstage and throughout the play with a delightful zaniness. She is Argon?s daughter Little Angel, played with a zest and wide-eyed craziness by Katie Paxton. Paxton contorts into positions that put a pretzel to shame, and is so adept with facial expressions that it is a disappointment when she turns toward the other side of the stage and her fantastic elasticity cannot be seen.

Katie Paxton?s ability to play the angelic brat with a puppeteer?s deftness and a personality that mimics the monstrous horror of a Chucky doll brings histrionics to the first act that only escalate as the bizarre characters continue to do their pirouettes onstage. Little Angel?s love for Irving Luigi (played by Shakespeare veteran Josh Tobin) is what drives her, and that love (as most loves) is what makes her crazier than she already is. When Luigi finally arrives onstage, the combination of the two of them makes for hilarity personified.

?

Argon?s psychosomatic illnesses lend themselves well to jokes that most grade school children find irresistible: fart jokes, breast and sex jokes, pratfalls, and goofy characterizations. They also elicited plenty of laughs from the opening night/world premiere audience, though the loudest guffaws came from a totally unscripted comment made by Argon when a pre-teen made for the bathroom about midway through the first act.

?Where do you think you?re going?? Epp called out, never missing a beat and remaining in character as Argon. Everyone in the audience dissolved in laughter, though the boy didn?t seem to notice; and the play continued without interruption.

Moli?re?s ability to use satire to expose religious hypocrisy translates well to this period in time when most Americans are concentrating on the presidential elections; and David Ball?s new adaptation of The Imaginary Invalid works hard to expose one of the central issues in the current campaign for president: the obsession with the state of health care in the United States. From the moment Argon takes to his bed, nightgown flapping, it is ironically clear that the ?lesser? health-care workers (the nurse and the Bucket Boy, aptly portrayed by Nilan Johnson) are the wisest of the bunch.

The doctors are fools who work for Argon only because of his incredible wealth. They have no idea what is wrong with him, if anything, and simply play along with his imaginary ailments (one of which appears to be easily fixed, according to the nurse. Simply ?wash the dingus,? she says, over and over). Without revealing the ending of this farce, suffice it to say that it is a joke recognizable to all and, ironically, mirrors Moli?re?s own tragic end.

Free Balance Class

push handsOn Friday, November 9, Club Deportivo will present a free instructional by Bruce Walker of Senior Independence Programming, focusing on balance for senior citizens.

Senior Independence Programming consists of a series of programs designed to enable senior citizens to maintain their independence and their chosen lifestyles. It is based on the exercises for seniors from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and also on the little known health and fitness exercises from Tai Chi (taijiquan) and even very rare fitness and attributes training from some martial arts (not the fighting skills, but the fitness drills, called Chi Kung or qigong). Classes are designed so that everyone, regardless of fitness level, will be able to safely perform and benefit from the activities.

Many of our exercises focus on balance and walking, others work on joint and spinal strength, other, seldom seen drills are designed to improve immune function and increase hormone production. Students have reported increased confidence, reduced falling, pain relief, improved breathing, and reduced symptoms from a number of various diseases and conditions.

Bruce Walker began developing these classes in 1996 at the Milford, Connecticut, senior center. In over 13 years of teaching these classes, well over a thousand seniors at several centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities have benefited. Mr. Walker has studied martial arts for over 40 years, and owned the Silent Dragon Schools of Kung Fu and Tai Chi for 25 years. Part of his training included TCM and Chinese herbal medicine. He is also a Certified Recreation Therapist.

Ongoing classes will begin the week after the instructional. There is no cost for the class, but a ten dollar per year membership for Club Deportivo is required for regular class attendance.

Beyond SEO: Inbound marketing and your 2013 online marketing plan

Turn Your Web Site Into a Magnet for Customers with Inbound Marketing

Traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is dead.

There ? I said it. Not sleeping. Not pining for the fjords. Dead. As in doornail.

So should you start ignoring search engines? Not one bit; in fact, you should be paying more attention to them than ever. Let me explain.

Let?s start with some basics.

SEO is all about taking your existing Web site and tweaking it ? changing some text, changing some code and building links back to it from other sites ??so that it appears higher in search engine results pages for keyword searches that matter to your business.

In my view ? and as it turns out, in Google?s view, too ? that focus is too narrow.

You see, when you focus so narrowly on inching your site up the Google search results you, frankly, end up doing some stupid stuff.

You end up packing the content of your site with so many keywords that it?s virtually unreadable, you end up creating hundreds and hundreds of junk Web sites in order to create links back to your site, you spam blogs with irrelevant messages about your product or service.

Just dumb stuff that doesn?t create value for anybody anywhere.

With an Inbound Marketing approach your focus is much broader ? and more tightly tied to real, meaningful business results for you.

Inbound Marketing is all about using great ??some would say exceptional ?? online content to help your prospective customers find your business, become a lead and ultimately to become your paying customer.

Search engine results ? and appearing prominently in them ? are still important. Search engines are ? and will be for some time to come ??probably the most important way for people to find products and services they?re looking for.

But in traditional SEO, the success metric is how high your site ranks for a given keyword. While in Inbound Marketing, the key metric is how effective your site content is at drawing people to it and how effective it is at converting those people into your paying customers.

Do you see the difference?

The Inbound Marketing playbook focuses on using all of the tools of online marketing, with great content at the hub:

  • Great, frequently updated online content improves search engine visibility and traffic to your site while it helps to educate your prospective clients
  • Social media tools help to amplify your message and engage your prospects
  • Effective content offers (again) and strong calls to action help to turn visitors to your site into leads
  • And more content (again), often delivered via email and social media, can help to educate those leads to a point where they?re ready to buy and more likely to buy from you than from your competitors.

In the Inbound Marketing playbook, SEO is only one small tactical element that?s at the service of bigger, more important business goals.

And it works!

Companies that use Inbound Marketing have far lower costs for acquiring each of their customers than companies using a hodgepodge of traditional marketing techniques.

And Google now rewards inbound marketers more than traditional SEO. With recent changes to the formula Google uses to generate search results, high quality, frequently updated content is now one of the most important factors in determining search engine rankings for your site.

That?s why Inbound Marketing deserves a place in your business? marketing plan for 2013.

Ping-pong bot takes cues from human opponents

12 hrs.

German researchers have created a ping-pong-playing robot that not only learns its initial move set from a human instructor, but can learn from its opponents and improvise new strategies.

The robot, built by Katharina Muelling and her team at Germany's?Technical University of Darmstadt, is equipped with a single large arm and a camera that watches the field of play. The team gave it a set of?elementary?techniques by a process called "kinesthetic teach-in," in which they physically guided the arm through a move, and the system committed the motion to memory.

Equipped with these "primitives," the arm could watch for the position of the ball using its camera and perform the appropriate move to return it to the other side of the table.

At first, it failed to hit any balls, even ones sent reliably from a ball-launching machine. But the system was designed to learn how to adjust and combine movements, and before long, it was returning 79 percent of shots from the launcher.

Then came the true test of its ability: A real human opponent. People are less reliable than ball?machines, and hit to a larger area than the system was "used to." However, it quickly adjusted, and after just one hour of playing against a human, was returning balls 88 percent of the time. It even hit back nine in a row, which anyone new to ping-pong can tell you is no easy feat.

A ping-pong bot may sound like rather a narrow field of research, but work along these lines can be generalized to other types of robots and devices, for instance medical or industrial devices that need to adjust to their environments. Muelling's work will be presented at an artificial intelligence symposium in Virginia next month, but the paper describing the latest advances can be read in its entirety here (PDF).

Likely Hurricane Sandy Coverage Issues Include Extent of Flood ...

Insurance Law

Although losses this week from Hurricane Sandy, which hit the Northeast hardest, are still being calculated, it appears that they will likely dwarf the billions racked up by Hurricane Irene, according to the Financial Times.

But as individuals and businesses deal with the latest storm damage, many may also have to decipher a potential insurance issue: It's not the wind so much as the water that often causes the most havoc in a major storm. And, because most property insurance policies exclude flood damage, this can make it difficult even for legal experts to determine what should and should not be covered under various policies.

For homeowners who have flood insurance, often purchased through a federal government program, the claims process can be fairly straightforward, according to the Associated Press. A Reuters article provides helpful step-by-step instructions for filing a claim that is likely to pass muster.

For those without flood insurance, it may still be possible to get help dealing with some water-related losses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or under state disaster relief programs.

A FEMA page focusing on the National Flood Insurance Program and a New York Times article offer additional details.

For businesses and hard-hit homeowners, insurance issues may be more complex. While a flood exclusion may apply to some damage, it could be that damage was caused by multiple perils, in which case it could be important to determine whether damage was simultaneous or sequential, according to Westlaw Insider, which offers a helpful primer of insurance terms and coverage issues.

Compliance with governmental requirements and damage, such as mold, that can arguably result from inadequate mitigation efforts can also be important in determining coverage issues, the article notes.

Storm will keep financial markets closed Tuesday

The floor of the New York Stock Exchange is empty of traders, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in New York. All major U.S. stock and options exchanges will remain closed Monday with Hurricane Sandy nearing landfall on the East Coast. Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria. Sand bags protect the front of the New York Stock Exchange, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012. Hurricane Sandy continued on its path Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds and soaking rain. There had been plans to allow electronic trading to go forward on the New York Stock Exchange but with a storm surge expected to cover parts of lower Manhattan in water, officials decided late Sunday that it was too risky to ask any personnel to staff the exchanges. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day Tuesday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast. Bond trading will also be closed.

The last time the New York Stock Exchange was closed for weather was in 1985 because of Hurricane Gloria, and it will be the first time since 1888 that the exchange will have been closed for two consecutive days because of weather. The cause then was a blizzard that left drifts as high as 40 feet in the streets of New York City.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq said they intend to reopen on Wednesday and would keep investors updated.

Much of the East Coast was at a standstill Monday as the storm approached. Mass transit and schools were closed across the region ahead of the storm hitting land, which was expected to happen later Monday.

Areas around New York's Financial District were part of a mandatory evacuation zone. The storm surge is already pushing water over seawalls in the southern tip of Manhattan.

CME Group's New York trading floor was closed, but its electronic markets for commodities were functioning. Crude oil fell 74 cents to close at $85.54 in electronic trading. CME said electronic trading for commodities would also be open Tuesday.

CME said it would reopen its stock index futures trading Monday night at 6 p.m. ET for overnight electronic trading and keep it open through 9:15 a.m. Tuesday. Trading on interest rate futures and options on futures including Treasurys, Eurodollar and Fed Funds would reopen at the same time Monday night and stay open Tuesday.

Bond trading will be closed Tuesday. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association called for an early close to bond trading Monday, at 12 noon. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was 1.72 percent, compared with 1.75 percent late Friday.

European stock markets fell. France's CAC-40 fell 0.8 percent, Britain's FTSE fell 0.2 percent and Germany's DAX lost 0.4 percent. Insurers such as Munich Re, Aviva PLC and Zurich Insurance fared worse than other stocks as investors worried about the potential cost of the storm's damage.

"The economic impact cannot be underestimated," said Elsa Lignos, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

The uncertainty generated by the storm comes at the start of a big week in the United States. This is the last full week before next Tuesday's presidential election and culminates Friday with the release of monthly jobs data, which many analysts think could have an impact on the vote.

"A significant swing in either direction is likely to be heavily reported in the media, potentially swinging the undecided voter," said James Hughes, chief market analyst at Alpari, of the jobs figures.

Some companies are postponing quarterly earnings reports scheduled for release early this week. So far, that includes Pfizer Inc. and Thomson Reuters. Burger King reported on schedule, and said its third-quarter net income fell 83 percent as revenue was hurt by the stronger dollar. Adjusted results topped expectations, however.

Even with many markets shut down, there was some encouraging news about the U.S. economy Monday. The Commerce Department reported that consumer spending increased 0.8 percent in September. That followed a 0.5 percent gain in August and was the best showing since February.

Personal income rose 0.4 percent, an improvement from a slight 0.1 percent gain in August and the best gain since March. It's a closely watched indicator as consumer spending drives about 70 percent of the nation's economic activity.

Why brands should stop making banner ads and start joining the ...

Most brands? websites aren?t part of the natural flow of the internet. Most of them sit in the middle of the web and don?t live where most of the web traffic happens (usually on publishers? websites). As a result brands have spent billions of dollars to move internet traffic from the flow to their sites. Since the average click through rate is 0.10 percent, moving people out of the flow clearly doesn?t work. In fact that strategy has failed miserably. Our approach is different.

Instead of trying to push water upstream, we believe brands should join the flow. Brands should move their content to where audiences are already going: the sites of big publishers like The Economist, the New York Times and ESPN.

Brands should do this by working with publishers to create content hubs where the brand?s content can live. You?ve heard a lot of about native advertising (eg, sponsored tweets, stories and pins). Think of this approach as creating native content.

While it?s much easier to buy lots of cheap display inventory we?ve found we create far more engagement by creating content hubs. We begin by working with the client to identify the best publishers to reach their audience?usually using comScore to help us analyze a publisher?s audience. Then we send the publisher a brief explaining the hub idea and asking them to work with us to create programs that are unique to their environment and content that will be meaningful to their audience. After all they know their audience best. As part of the process we would have already done an audit of the client?s owned content, which we?d make available to the publisher. Sometimes there?s enough content for the publisher to package with their content and other times there are gaps that can be filled by the publisher creating new content or by the client creating new content.

Joining the flow as we?ve described usually isn?t cheap but it is very effective at driving engagement. It?s amazing what happens when you give audiences meaningful experiences in environments that matter to them. They interact. Since many of our clients can?t afford to create multiple content hubs, nor do they have enough human resources to create all the necessary content, we?ve worked with publishers to create ?content widgets? (rich media units). They?re scaled down versions of the hubs. ?Many publishers are still not set up to work with marketers to create hubs so they find content widgets more manageable.

As part of our content distribution strategy we advise clients to buy programs such as Outbrain which help drive traffic to the hubs. When clients first hear this they ask if it really makes sense to drive traffic to a publisher?s site. We remind them that we need to promote our content where it?s most likely to be viewed, which is not on their site. It?s on the hubs. It?s fantastic when you see the light bulb go off when they get it. It?s a whole new way to think about distributing content.

The last piece is measurement. Many clients still think that click through (CT) is important. But when your primary objective is to drive engagement with brand content wherever it lives, driving CT is no longer a meaningful metric. Instead brands have to develop engagement metrics, which measure the interaction with their content wherever it?s found.

Over the last year we?ve seen a lot more of our clients join the flow and we?ve heard stories in the press about other brands joining the flow. Creating content that belongs in the flow isn?t easy, but it?s the best way to drive engagement. And engagement matters.

Leopard Seals Suck Up Dinner

Like whales, this Antarctic predator can strain small prey from the water with sieve-like teeth

leopard seal Image: Gump Stump/Wikimedia Commons

The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is one of Antarctica?s top predators. It kills penguins and smaller seals by biting them with sharp canine teeth and repeatedly smashing them against the ocean surface to flay and dismember them. But it now seems that this seal is also equipped to tackle smaller prey.

David Hocking from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and his colleagues have shown that the leopard seal eats krill like a whale, by sucking them into its mouth and sieving them through special teeth. Other scientists had predicted this behaviour from the shape and arrangement of the seal?s teeth, but this is the first time that it has been observed and filmed. The researchers' results are published in Polar Biology.

By switching between two feeding styles, the leopard seal can dine from both the top and bottom of the Southern Ocean?s food web. ?This is equivalent to a lion hunting down zebras, but also regularly feasting on ants or termites,? says Erich Fitzgerald from Museum Victoria, Melbourne, who was involved in the study.

?You?d expect that leopard seals would sacrifice something in not specializing on either large or small prey, but the authors persuasively argue that it is a dual specialist,? says Alexander Werth, a biologist from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. ?This helps to explain why leopard seals are so successful.?

From whale to seal
Hocking, Fitzgerald and Alistair Evans from Monash University studied leopard seals because the animals' trident-shaped postcanine teeth are similar to those of ancient fossil whales, such as Janjucetus, and the researchers were interested in the feeding habits of these whales. Because the seals were thought to use their postcanine teeth to strain krill from the water, it seemed possible that prehistoric whales did too. But as Hocking searched the literature to confirm this, ?it became apparent that nobody had ever actually observed leopard seals underwater [while they fed] on small prey like krill.?

To do that, Hocking travelled to Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, the only institution in the world that houses leopard seals. Once there, he presented the resident seals, Casey and Sabine, with four small fish sticking headfirst out of a plastic box. At her very first go, Sabine sucked a fish out and expelled the excess water through the sides of her mouth. Hocking called up his team: ?Yep, they do it, all right!?

Casey and Sabine repeatedly used the same technique. Their thick lips allowed them to create suction, and their interlocking trident-shaped teeth imprisoned ingested fish or krill when the animals blew out the ingested water. California sea lions lack such complex teeth ? when the same fish-primed box was presented to them, they often blew their prey out of the sides of their mouth along with the water.

There is indirect evidence that wild leopard seals behave in the same way as the two captive seals. The team examined the skulls of 26 wild-caught adults and found that, whereas their gripping canines were often worn down, the postcanines showed fewer signs of wear, consistent with their role as sieves.

Although the team saw the captive seals sucking only one fish at a time, it seems likely that the animals could ingest krill en masse by using their flexible necks to strike at the heart of a shoal. Krill can constitute up to 83% of a leopard seal's diet in regions in which larger prey are in short supply. One individual that was dissected was found to have more than 10,000 freshly caught krill in its stomach. ?That?s a lot of krill to catch one at a time!? says Fitzgerald.

PST: Still waiting word on Eddie Johnson

We still don?t know much about Eddie Johnson?s hamstring, which is threatening his availability for Friday?s playoff opener against Real Salt Lake.

Johnson has been more confident lately than we?ve seen him in years ? since he left Kansas City back in 2007 for four lost years abroad.

With 14 goals, he was Seattle?s leading scorer this year and the league?s sixth best scorer. But Johnson left Sunday?s regular season finale in the first half and was schedule to undergo an MRI on Monday. Team officials have yet to say how that turned out.

Meanwhile, we can tell you how head coach Sigi Schmid feels about his team?s loss to Los Angeles down in Southern California to finish the regular season:

I think we are ready for the playoffs, tonight has to be a good motivator. Sometimes when you get slapped a little bit towards the end of the season it can be a good thing because it reminds you of how that feels, and it is a feeling that you don?t want to have come back. I think this team definitely has what it takes to make a run at the championship. There is enough quality on the field, enough quality on our bench, and the desire is definitely there.?

Introduction Week -- Day One for FamilySearch Family Tree

OK, so this is supposed to be the week that FamilySearch Family Tree (FSFT) is "introduced." We have been working with a rather cranky website for the past week on?FamilySearch.org?and would welcome some stability, at least. Last Monday, the site was down completely and since my class was on FamilySearch Family Tree, I had the class members vote on what else they would like to learn and taught about Google tools for Genealogy instead. The class went well. I have the same scheduled class today and if anyone shows up, we'll see if the program is still running.

I worked some on FSFT and noticed some issues, such as when two obvious duplicate people where showing, even in the same family, the program failed to find any possible duplicates to allow the people to be merged. FSFT also refused to allow a gender change when there were two entries, one showing the person as a male and the other showing the same person as a female. Perhaps that feature will always need the intervention of Family Search?

Anyway, a check of the program today shows it pretty much the same as yesterday and last week and so forth back to the not-so-recent-now changes. I checked the Reference Guide and it is still dated 2 October 2012. So there are no major updates.

I did get contacted by one reader who asked if FSFT was a "replacement" for Personal Ancestral File? I am not really sure how to answer such a question. I do think that it is important to have your own research on your own computer in some format using a genealogy database program but those genealogists that are still using Personal Ancestral File (PAF) should do something with their data. Especially since I spent over an hour transferring some files from an older version of PAF to something usable just this last week. This might not be possible too much longer.

If I hear anything or see anything online, I will try to respond, but this week we are beginning our travels to Atlanta for the Family History Expos. I am not sure how much writing I will be doing with the travel schedule. We are leaving early to visit family and then to the Expo on November 9 and 10 at the Gwinnett Center, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway,?Duluth, Georgia 30097.

Android 4.2: Still Jelly Bean, but sweeter

9 hrs.

Along with a small mountain of new Nexus devices, Google announced also?Android 4.2 on Monday. It's still called Jelly Bean, just like the prior version, but it's made just a little bit sweeter by the addition of new?features such as Photo Sphere, Gesture Typing, multi-user support and more.

Photo Sphere
Like iOS, Android now has a baked-in tool that'll help you create panoramic images.?In Android 4.2, you can take photos in any direction???an?improvement?on the panorama feature in iOS 6???and?they'll be put together into "photo spheres," which allow someone to explore the images you took as a 360-degree environment. (If you've ever used Microsoft's?Photosynth app, it sounds a lot like that.)

Gesture Typing
Plenty of third-party keyboards, such as Swype, offer users the ability to type by dragging their fingers across the on-screen keyboard, and now this feature's built right into Android.?Additionally, the new keyboard will "anticipate and predict the next word" you intend on typing so that you can simply select suggested words without even needing to type.

Multi-user support on tablets
Sharing an Android tablet with a family member will be significantly less awkward thanks to multi-user support. Each user can have his or her own homescreen, background, widgets, apps and?games. Toggling between users is supposedly as easy as switching between apps.

Wireless Display
Android 4.2 has a Wireless Display feature, similar to Apple's AirPlay, which allows you to share movies, YouTube clips, and whatever else might be on your screen to an HDTV. You'll just need to attach a little adapter to any HDMI-enabled TV and you're set to mirror content.

Daydream
Daydream is described as something that allows your Android device to "display useful and delightful information when idle or docked." It sounds like a snazzy screensaver, basically.

Souped-up notifications
Swiping down on your Android device reveals the notification pane. And now you can instantly take an action directly from that spot. This means that if you spot a missed call, you'll also see a button allowing you to return it.

When do I get this?
No word as to when Android 4.2 will become available for various Android devices, but we do know that the new Nexus lineup, which ships on Nov. 13, will be pre-loaded with the latest version of Jelly Bean.

Films rarely considered art in India: Reema Kagti - TDNPost

Mumbai, Oct 30 (IANS) ?Talaash? director Reema Kagti feels that Indian films are rarely considered art and they are there to just provide entertainment.

?In India, films are rarely considered art, they are considered entertainment. Through film festivals we are breaking this reductionist view of filmmaking? and I am glad,? she told IANS in an exclusive interview.

She says after making ?Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd? in 2007, she never made a conscious effort to direct a commercial or an art film.

?I don?t decide if I am going to be making this kind of film or that kind of film. For me, it?s about falling in love with the story and then writing a screenplay for that story. And the treatment I give to that story.

?I don?t consciously try to make a commercial or a festival film. I just go with the story and wherever that leads me to,? she said.
