I'm spending christmas in Washington state with my eldest brother (I live in Tx). I'm catholic, but my brother is a member of the church of latter day saints. That said he is vey very respectful of my religion, and very supportive of it. He says as long as we pray to the same God he doesn't see any problems. He even went to mass with me when he was visiting over thanksgiving. He wants me to go to church with him tomorrow, which I readily agreed to. My question is, what should I do to be respectful. I know he's butted heads with a few members of his church because of their catholic bashing (he doesn't like that at all). If asked, should I keep my mouth shut that I'm catholic? For his sake only, I don't want to cause trouble for him.

Dear Lonely Guy,

Fear not For God is with you...

I say, "Go For It".

You should go

There is no need to bring up you're Catholic, unless you are specificaly asked. At that point, I would simply say, Yes, I'm Catholic". That should be sufficient. If someone is unkind and bgins to "Bash You", simply say, "I do not care to engage in this conversation", and walk away. I am sure your brother will be supportive of you.

I wish you well my Catholic friend. May God continue to bless you abundantly !!!

The thing to do to be respectful is to plan ahead which Mass you want to attend. IF you were vacationing and your "hobby" was going antique shopping, then I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem if you went antique shopping while you were in town. Same thing. Catholics have the opportunity to attend Mass on Saturday evening, Sunday morning, afternoon, and evening. Pick one.

I can help you out if you are in SW Wash.

The top brass of the Church of Latter Day Saints get on quite amicably with the top brass of the Catholic Church in the United States. It's only when you get further down the ranks that the "our God's better than your God" nonsense sets in.

Remember that there is only one God and that we worship him in many ways. Go to the Mormon Service with an open mind and you won't find much to offend or corrupt you - or in fact much that's unfamiliar. If you are asked, there should be no problem telling people that you are a Catholic. You're unlikely to be the only one in the congregation. Just don't wear that tee shirt with the Latin inscription.

Update 3:30 p.m.

He is not going to New Orleans, but Cody Journell is heading home to Giles County.

"The court will make it a 100,000 dollar secured bond," said Judge Josiah Showalter.

The suspended Virginia Tech place kicker's parents put up the family home as collateral to get him out of jail.

According to court testimony, prosecutors say Journell, Matthew Brady, and Matthew Dunton rushed into the Blacksburg home of Tech basketball player Dorenzo Hudson, and his roommate Sean Allen, using a BB gun a week ago.

"He and the other two boys are very lucky that somebody on the other side didn't shoot and kill them," said James Turk, Journell's attorney.

Prosecutors say a fourth man who drove the three to the home, but was not charged, told police the incident was all over stolen marijuana involving Allen.

"He stated that all three defendants, including this defendant Mr. Journell made a plan to go over to Mr. Allen's house in order to quote settle the score," said Patrick Jensen, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Montgomery County.

The conditions of Journell's bail include living with his parents in Giles County, a 6 p.m. curfew, no contact with Hudson, and no drugs or alcohol. He also cannot leave the state.

Judge Showalter said he granted bond, because Journell has no criminal record, he was not the one holding the weapon, and the victim did not oppose him being released.

Brady and Dunton remain in custody after withdrawing their appeals, to hire new attorney's from their hometowns.

A preliminary hearing is set for all three on February 23rd.

Update 8:55 a.m.

Virginia Tech kicker Cody Journell and two other men appeared before a judge this morning (Wednesday) for a bond appeal.

Journell, Matthew Dunton, and Matthew Brady are accused of breaking into a Blacksburg home with a BB gun last week.

A judge released Journell on a $100,000 secured bond.? Dunton and Brady withdrew their motion to appeal bond, and are still in jail.

The suspended football player?s father put up the family home as collateral to get his son out of jail.

Stipulations of the bond are that Journell must:

  • Llive with his parents
  • Obey a 6 p.m. curfew
  • Have no contact with Dorenzo Hudson, a Virginia Tech basketball player who lived in the home that police say was broken into
  • Remain alcohol and drug free

A preliminary hearing for the three is also set for February 23rd.

Woman knits scarves, shawls for cancer patients

LEE COUNTY, FL -

If idle hands are the devil's playground, Alice Newsom has a one way ticket to heaven.

For four years, the 91 year old knitter has knit 445 scarves and shawls in all different shapes and colors.

Every 33 hours she adds another to the growing pile in her Fort Myers home.

This month, Alice created 9 shawls, but they won't sit in her home for long.?

They'll end up in Susan G. Komen Project Hope Bags which are given to breast cancer patients.

Sandi Shank was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

"It will make or break you," she said.

One of the first gifts she got before treatment was a Project Hope Bag.? Inside - her very own shawl.

After surgery, Shank's cancer is gone, but her shawl will stay with her forever.

With her eyesight slowly slipping, Newsom isn't sure how much longer she can knit.? But every stitch brings her one step closer to helping someone else.

"This is something they use every time they are in treatment and at home.? Every day they use my gift," said Newsom.

Ford Reports F-150 Ecoboost V-6 Truck Sales Hit 100,000 Mark

It seems as though Ford?s EcoBoost engines have not only boosted fuel-efficiency, but also sales, as the automaker is reporting that 100,000 full-size pickups with the V-6 EcoBoost engine have been sold this year. The efficient, powerful twin-turbo V-6 was one of the highlights that helped the F-150 win our 2012 Truck of the Year.

This may not come as a surprise to some, since Ford?s first-quarter sales provided a pretty accurate forecast for this milestone. The first pickups with the Ecoboost went on sale in late February, and shortly after in April, it had already accounted for 35 percent of F-150 sales, with Ford predicting incoming orders would track even higher at 40 percent. Fast forward to October, and the automaker upped its sales forecast to a 45 percent take rate, with the 75,000 units sold through September being a good indication.

The 3.5-liter Ecoboost V-6 is rated at 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, returning five more horsepower and 40 more lb-ft of torque than the equivalent 5.0-liter V-8 engine. The truck is also offered with conventional naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 as the base engine, but the high demand continues to center around the more powerful EcoBoost. ?Keeping the momentum, Ford is aggressively rolling out other versions of the EcoBoost formula across its passenger cars and SUV lineup in both four and six-cylinder (and even three-cylinder) versions.

The 100,000 sales mark for the EcoBoost is significant, since the automaker had not seen V-6 pickups sell in such high numbers since 1985.

Analysis: Caution mutes US response to NKorea (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's cautious response to the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il reflects unease and uncertainty about the leadership transition in the reclusive country that has confounded U.S. presidents since Harry S. Truman.

For the past 60 years, the "hermit kingdom" has vexed the United States and its allies with war, nuclear tests, missile launches, belligerence and bellicose bombast. But since he took office, President Barack Obama has had to deal with the country at perhaps its most secretive point: an unclear succession at the very top at a time of deep concern about the stability of the regime.

Thus, the administration's carefully worded public messages have underscored the administration's desire for better relations with the autocratic nation and its concern about the welfare of the North Korean people. They are also gentle reminders that Washington expects Pyongyang to follow through on denuclearization pledges and improve ties with its neighbors, particularly South Korea.

The kid gloves treatment accorded to the North's youthful new leader, Kim's twenty-something son Kim Jong Un, has attracted criticism from some who see this is a moment to make a forceful case for dramatic reform and regime change.

But without solid intelligence of the opaque transition process and fearful of misunderstandings that could lead to provocations with the notoriously erratic North, U.S. officials concluded that the best course is to say little, wait and watch.

Indeed, the administration's initial reactions to Kim's death have contained little substance at all and were couched in niceties.

"All I can say is that we're monitoring the situation closely," White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Wednesday as North Korean state media broadcast pictures of wailing mourners, apparently overcome with grief. "Kim Jong Il had designated Kim Jong Un as his official successor, and at this time we have no indication that that has changed."

Carney added: "We hope that the new North Korean leadership will take the steps necessary to support peace, prosperity and a better future for the North Korean people, including through acting on its commitments to denuclearization."

Those comments echoed words from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Monday, more than 16 hours after Kim's death was announced, she was the first senior U.S. official to comment publicly on the developments. In intentionally vague comments, she called for "a peaceful and stable transition in North Korea" and expressed hope that it would not affect "regional peace and stability."

Ironically, it was Clinton who first stirred the pot about a possible succession crisis in North Korea.

Nearly three years ago, on her first trip to Asia as secretary of state, she stunned diplomatic circles with a frank appraisal of U.S. concerns amid rampant speculation about the health of Kim Jong Il, who had suffered a stroke in 2008, and his choice of a successor.

"If there is a succession, even if it's a peaceful succession, that creates more uncertainty and it also may encourage behaviors that are even more provocative as a way to consolidate power within the society," Clinton told reporters on her way to South Korea on Feb. 20, 2009.

Her remarks on a previously taboo subject sparked great debate. In Seoul the next day, she expressed surprise at the uproar, noting that reports of Kim choosing his youngest son Kim Jung Un to succeed him had "been in the news for months."

"I don't think that it's a forbidden subject to talk about succession in the hermit kingdom," Clinton said. "In fact, it seems to me it's got to be factored into any policy review that one is undertaking. ... I think it would be irresponsible for it not to be factored into what you were thinking about."

That same month, U.S. diplomats were scrambling to collect any information they could about Kim Jong Un from South Korean, Chinese and Japanese officials and experts, according to leaked State Department cables published by WikiLeaks.

Unfortunately for the Americans, their interlocutors had sharply divided opinions, according to the cables. Some predicted the North Korean regime would collapse politically within two to three years of Kim Jong Il's death. Others foresaw a power struggle between the young and untested Kim Jong Un and rivals in the elite but differed over who would prevail. Others believed there would be little change.

One apparent area of convergence, however, was that most South Korean experts believed the challenge for the younger Kim would come after his father's death.

Thus, as North Korea's transition is under way, the lack of clarity has put U.S. policy on hold.

Before Kim's passing, the administration had been expected this week to announce the resumption in food aid to North Korea and a potential bilateral meeting on nuclear disarmament. Although the State Department said there had been brief exchange with North Korean officials in New York on Monday, both initiatives are now in flux pending the end of the North's mourning period.

The administration says it is respecting that mourning period by understanding that North Korean officials will not be available for discussions. Yet it has steadfastly refused to express any sympathy for the death of Kim, whose Stalinist regime is accused of having one of the worst, if not the worst, human rights records in the world.

While showering the late Czech democracy leader Vaclev Havel with effusive eulogies, American officials have refused to even utter the word "condolence" in relation to Kim.

"With regard to the C-word," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday, "I think we didn't consider it appropriate in this case."

Debt discussions ongoing after lenders reject restructuring plan, says Eircom

Debt discussions ongoing after lenders reject restructuring plan, says Eircom

Saturday, December 24, 2011

EIRCOM has said it is proceeding with detailed discussions with its first-lien lenders regarding their restructuring proposal for the group.

Eircom said its board informed the company?s majority owner, Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), that a majority of first-lien lenders rejected a plan put forward by the Singapore company. STT-nominated directors have resigned from the Eircom board with immediate effect, Eircom said in a statement.

Eircom chairman Ned Sullivan said that "after many months of deliberation", the announcement "provides an environment of certainty for all the parties to move forward with the restructuring process".

STT said in a separate statement it had withdrawn its proposal and was disappointed the lenders didn?t accept it.

On Thursday, Moody?s downgraded the parent of Eircom, saying the position of its creditors was deteriorating due to a weak Irish economy and delays in a proposed restructuring deal.

Laden with debt and suffering from under-investment since its privatisation in 1999, Eircom is in talks with lenders about restructuring its ?3.75bn debt.

Moody?s cut ERC Ireland Finance?s probability of default rating to Ca, or highly speculative, from Caa3.

It said the group?s loss-given default ? how much of its loan would be written off if they go bad ? was around 35% if a consensual restructuring is achieved.

"Today?s rating action reflects Moody?s concerns that the potential recovery pros-pects for Eircom?s creditors could be lower than previously anticipated by the rating agency," said Ivan Palacios of Moody?s.

A spokesperson for the first-lien committee said: "The key focus for the first lien is to restructure Eircom?s balance sheet so that the company?s management plan can be implemented as a matter of urgency."

The spokesperson added: "The first-lien solution firmly aligns the interests of debt and equity holders and extends the maturity profile of Eircom?s restructured debt to 2017."

Microsoft's Picture Password System for Windows 8 Dubbed a "Fisher-Price Toy" by Security Guru

One of Windows 8's biggest new features, the ability to use a photo as a touch-based authentication method for login, has been described as a "Fisher-Price toy" by the creator of the RSA SecureID two-factor authentication token.

Speaking to IT World, Kenneth Weiss, formerly of RSA and now the head of a three-factor authentication firm called Universal Secure Registry, is scathing of Microsoft's touch-centric login system, which asks users to press key points in a photograph in a particular order to log in to a device.

"I think it's cute. I don't think it's serious security," Weiss explains. "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access."

Weiss's concerns are somewhat allayed by Microsoft's positioning of the picture-based login system as an alternative, rather than a replacement, to the traditional password-based method, with a focus on touch-screen portable devices like tablets and smartphones where speed of access is a concern.

With Windows 8 targeting tablets in a big way, via the new touch-centric Metro UI design and its focus on web-powered apps, the photo unlock method is a neat feature - but, as Weiss points out, may be a poor choice from a security perspective.

Japan predicts 40 years for Fukushima nuclear plant cleanup --The location and condition of the melted fuel is not exactly known. 21 Dec 2011 Japan's government said Wednesday that it could take 40 years to clean up and fully decommission a nuclear plant that went into meltdown earlier this year. Nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono suggested that the timetable was ambitious, acknowledging that decommissioning three reactors with severely melted fuel plus spent fuel rods at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant was an "unprecedented project," and that the process was not "totally foreseeable."

Japan to shape post-Fukushima energy options by spring

TOKYO - Japan plans to come up with options by next spring for its new energy policy, which will aim to manage the risks of nuclear power, select energy sources to reduce reliance on nuclear and help head off climate change, the government said on Wednesday.

What's this?
The Fukushima atomic crisis, triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, has prompted Japan's government to review its previous energy policy from scratch.

?

Prior to the disaster, Japan had planned to boost nuclear generation to more than 50 percent of its electricity by 2030 from around 30 percent now, partly to fight climate change.

?

Economics Minister Motohisa Furukawa, who also chairs a ministerial panel on energy and environment that is the key driver for post-Fukushima energy policy, said he did not have any pre-set image or period of time for options to apply.

?

"We don't have anything concrete in our mind at present on what options will look like," Furukawa told reporters after a panel. He added that such options would be presented by the end of March.

?

Furukawa said three sub-panels of experts ? one on climate change policy, another on the balance of a new energy portfolio and the Japan Atomic Energy Commission on nuclear policy ? will hold discussions in coming months, and the government will bring together their conclusions into a range of options by next spring.

?

An actual energy strategy will be in place by summer, based on public debate on these options, he said.

?

In an interim report in July compiled by Furukawa's panel, ministers agreed that Japan should come up with a new policy through open debate using scientific data.

?

They also agreed the country's post-Fukushima goals should include weaning itself away from dependence on nuclear power and making changes to accept more user-oriented energy supply structures.

Fusion Garage's website goes dark -- has it bitten the dust?

Perhaps it's the comeback that wasn't meant to be -- Fusion Garage has apparently silenced its radios for over a week on Twitter, and more than a month on Facebook. Potentially worse, its website is now unreachable, displaying only a "Database connection error." Although its Grid10 tablet was set for a delayed October 1st release, some folks over at The JooJoo Forum and on Fusion Garage's Facebook page are reporting that they've yet to receive their tabs, weeks after placing orders.

We've fielded more than a few concerned tips saying the same, and sadly, that's just the tip of this iceberg, as there's also been mention of slow correspondence from the company, with wishy-washy responses about what's going on. One forum poster mentions eventually hearing back from its public relations agency -- this after contacting FG for order details -- with an indication that a refund is on the way.

We've reached out for an official comment but received nothing but silence. That said, we're hearing we aren't the only ones having a hard time getting in contact with Fusion Garage's executives, leaving us with a sinking suspicion that there will be no third go 'round for the house that Chandra built. Ordered a Grid10 yourself, or still waiting on your free JooJoo replacement? Let us know about your experience in the comments below.

Update: We have a comment from Fusion Garage's PR agency:
Unfortunately, none of our efforts have resulted in any communication from the company to the customers. Given all of this, we don't have any other choice but to cease working with FG effective tomorrow.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

(AP) ? Dozens of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested Saturday after they scaled a chain-link fence or crawled under it to get to an Episcopal church-owned lot they want to use for a new camp site.

Protesters used a wooden ladder to scale the fence or lifted it from below while others cheered them on. A man wearing a Santa suit stood on the ladder among others, as they ignored red "Private Property" signs.

As officers made arrests, protesters shouted obscenities and hollered: "Make them catch you!" The group was inside the lot for a short time before being led out by police in single file through a space in the fence. About 50 people were arrested, police said.

"We're just trying to say that this country has gone in the wrong direction, and we need spaces that we can control and we can decide our future in, and that's what this is about," said David Suker, who was among those who scaled the fence.

Before the arrests, several hundred gathered in Duarte Square, a half-acre (0.2 hectare) wedge of a park at the edge of Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood and across the street from the vacant lot.

They gathered partly to mark the three-month anniversary of the Occupy movement and partly to demand use of the lot, owned by Trinity Church.

The original Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan was shut down last month.

Trinity is a Zuccotti Park neighbor that helped demonstrators assemble, and provided them shelter in the three months since the movement began. The day after authorities moved in and cleaned out Zuccotti Park, about a dozen protesters went to the vacant lot, clipped the fence at the church-owned property and were arrested, along with some journalists.

Since then, some Occupy protesters have launched a bid to gain the church's consent for them to use the space. Trinity's Rev. James H. Cooper said giving the protesters access to the lot would not be a safe or smart move.

"There are no facilities at the Canal Street lot. Demanding access and vandalizing the property by a determined few OWS protesters won't alter the fact that there are no basic elements to sustain an encampment," he wrote in a statement. "The health, safety and security problems posed by an encampment here, compounded by winter weather, would dwarf those experienced at Zuccotti Park."

On Friday, the top bishop of the Episcopal Church asked protesters not to trespass on the property. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori warned it could result in "legal and police action."

Trinity Church dates back to the colonial era and was a refuge for relief workers after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. A sculpture out front was made out of a giant sycamore tree destroyed on 9/11.

"I feel it is very much in keeping with the tradition over the years of Trinity to work with poor people, to help poor people," said Stephen Chinlund, 77, a retired Episcopalian priest and one of several at the square Saturday.

Chinlund held a sign that read: Trinity, hero of 9/11, be a hero again!"

Tom Cruise reprises his role in 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol': movie review

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his team go rogue in the latest 'Mission Impossible' escapade, 'Ghost Protocol,' one of the best in the series.?

?Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,? the latest installment in the 16-year-old series, is one of the best. It marks the live-action debut of director Brad Bird, the highly imaginative mind behind those animated marvels ?Iron Giant,? ?The Incredibles,? and ?Ratatouille.? He makes the transition smoothly, perhaps because so many of the highflying stunts in this film are essentially out of "The Incredibles? playbook. The movie, although it will be available in standard formats, is best enjoyed in IMAX, where the big death-defying hijinx and the panoramas of places like Dubai, United Arab Emirates, are literally eye-popping.

Tom Cruise is, of course, back as Ethan Hunt, who we first see breaking out of a Russian prison with the help of Simon Pegg?s computer whiz Benji Dunn, another holdover from the previous escapade. Soon joining in are no-nonsense Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and agent William Brandt (Jeremy Renner). When a secret mission inside the Kremlin goes terribly wrong and part of the edifice is blown away, the IMF team is declared ?ghost protocol? by the US president ? i.e. they?re on their own.

Even without any official backup, the impossibilists have a ready arsenal of space-age hardware at their disposal. They?ll need it. They are attempting, after all, to bring down a mad genius (Michael Nyqvist) who wants to reboot the world by triggering a nuclear winter.

The film?s centerpiece stunt is Ethan?s clinging with suction gloves to the side of Dubai?s tallest building, 123 stories up. Cruise reportedly did his own stunt work. If so, I can only imagine what the insurance on this film cost.

Some of the action gets repetitive, and the Mumbai sequences would have been better if Mumbai, and not just the interiors of a zillionaire?s fancy hotel, had been utilized. But ?Ghost Protocol? is a very good thrill ride and Cruise is better than he?s been in a long time. Despite all the calisthenics, he seems relaxed ? even while dangling sky high.?Grade:?A- (Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence.)

Ariz. prosecutor wants immigration checks restored (AP)

PHOENIX ? The federal government's decision to stop an Arizona sheriff from checking inmates' immigration status will allow criminals to be released into the community, Maricopa County's top prosecutor said Friday as he asked the president to order Homeland Security officials to restore access to federal systems revoked a day earlier.

The Obama administration action came after the Department of Justice determined that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office participated in a "systematic disregard" for the Constitutional rights of Latinos while targeting illegal immigrants.

The fallout from the report was swift. Homeland Security officials announced the department is severing ties with Arpaio, stripping his jail officers of their federal power to check whether inmates in county jails are in the county illegally. Department officials also are restricting Arpaio's office from using a program that uses fingerprints collected in local jails to identify illegal immigrants.

"They don't need to do this. This effort at leverage is placing Arizona citizens at risk," Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said. "Preventing us from being able to get the necessary information to provide a court with the non-bondable status for serious offenses jeopardizes the community's safety, and limiting our ability to get information in order to comply with international treaty obligations for consular access calls into question future prosecutions."

The Justice Department comments' Thursday that Arpaio's office carried out a blatant pattern of discrimination against Latinos and held a disregard for the Constitution brought the most bruising criticism yet to the lawman's boundary-pushing foray into Arizona's immigration enforcement over the last six years.

Montgomery on Friday questioned the timing of the Justice Department's findings, because a civil rights case that raises similar issues is currently before a federal judge in Phoenix.

But he acknowledged the findings raised significant issues, although he "is not going to accept the findings at face value.

"Nor am I going to reject them," he said.

Montgomery said the federal government's actions will prevent his office from enforcing an Arizona law denying bail to illegal immigrants charged with serious felonies.

Arpaio, defiant and caught by surprise by the report's release on Thursday, called the allegations a politically motivated attack by President Barack Obama's administration that will make Arizona unsafe by keeping illegal immigrants on the street.

The Obama administration "might as well erect their own pink neon sign at the Arizona-New Mexico border saying welcome illegals to your United States, my home is your home," he said.

The government found that Arpaio's office committed a wide range of civil rights violations against Latinos, including unjust immigration patrols and jail policies that deprive prisoners of basic Constitutional rights. "We found discriminatory policing that was deeply rooted in the culture of the department, a culture that breeds a systematic disregard for basic constitutional protections," said Thomas Perez, who heads the Justice Department's civil rights division.

The report will be used by the Justice Department to seek major changes at Arpaio's office, such as new policies against discrimination and improvements of staff and officers. Arpaio faces a Jan. 4 deadline for saying whether he wants to work out an agreement to make the changes. If not, the federal government will sue him, possibly putting in jeopardy millions of dollars in federal funding for Maricopa County.

Arpaio has long denied the racial profiling allegations, saying people are stopped if deputies have probable cause to believe they have committed crimes and that deputies later find many of them are illegal immigrants. He also said the decision by Homeland Security to sever ties will result in illegal immigrants being released from jail and large numbers.

Montgomery said he will ask the Justice Department to provide him with more specific information so he can do his own review of cases now in his office.
