On Friday, November 9, Club Deportivo will present a free instructional by Bruce Walker of Senior Independence Programming, focusing on balance for senior citizens.
Senior Independence Programming consists of a series of programs designed to enable senior citizens to maintain their independence and their chosen lifestyles. It is based on the exercises for seniors from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and also on the little known health and fitness exercises from Tai Chi (taijiquan) and even very rare fitness and attributes training from some martial arts (not the fighting skills, but the fitness drills, called Chi Kung or qigong). Classes are designed so that everyone, regardless of fitness level, will be able to safely perform and benefit from the activities.
Many of our exercises focus on balance and walking, others work on joint and spinal strength, other, seldom seen drills are designed to improve immune function and increase hormone production. Students have reported increased confidence, reduced falling, pain relief, improved breathing, and reduced symptoms from a number of various diseases and conditions.
Bruce Walker began developing these classes in 1996 at the Milford, Connecticut, senior center. In over 13 years of teaching these classes, well over a thousand seniors at several centers, nursing homes, hospitals, and other facilities have benefited. Mr. Walker has studied martial arts for over 40 years, and owned the Silent Dragon Schools of Kung Fu and Tai Chi for 25 years. Part of his training included TCM and Chinese herbal medicine. He is also a Certified Recreation Therapist.
Ongoing classes will begin the week after the instructional. There is no cost for the class, but a ten dollar per year membership for Club Deportivo is required for regular class attendance.
